“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone…” Mt 21:42
This Gospel story describes God’s great love for His people by sending His only begotten Son Jesus, whom the Jews then rejected and became a stumbling block for them. In this same parable, Jesus also describes God’s purpose for every man and woman, especially His own people. God created us to serve His purpose. God, who is clearly the owner of the vineyard, is also the creator and owner of the whole world. He would remind us that we are only ‘tenants’ or ‘lodgers’, placed here for the sole purpose of serving our Creator. We, as tenants, clearly are not the owners, but are merely stewards. In the same way, no one really owns his or her life, or anything else in all creation. But this is what is clear from the Lord’s story… the Creator, our Almighty God, gave life to all people, and, in His infinite love and mercy, also appointed us tenants to take care of the vineyard. Now, the vineyard is our life, and God, as the owner of the vineyard, chooses to entrust this life to us. Our life is God’s gift to us; how we live this life is our gift to God.
